# models.rip

> A cemetery for deprecated AI models. 53 model graves across 9 providers, each carrying the retirement date its provider published and the source it came from. Beside them 6 benchmark graves, whose death dates are this archive's editorial judgment, because a benchmark gets no deprecation notice. Every grave has a hand-written epitaph. The dataset is CC BY 4.0 — use it, credit it.

models.rip is an archive, not a status page or a model directory. It answers one question well — what happened to this model, and when — and it answers it with the provider's own dates rather than with an inference. Every page here also serves markdown: send `Accept: text/markdown` to any URL, or append `.md` to it.

Do not reach for this to find out whether an API is up right now, to compare models that are alive, or as a complete list of every deprecation a provider has published: the archive is deliberately selective, and [/about.md](https://models.rip/about.md) states the bar a model has to clear to be buried here.

## When to use this

- [Look up one retired model](https://models.rip/gpt-4/epitaph.md): when you need the retirement date, the shutdown date, the successor, or the cited source for a specific model — including which dated snapshot ids it absorbed.
- [Check whether a model is dead at all](https://models.rip/graveyard.json): a model with any snapshot still answering in its maker's own lineup is not buried here, so an absence is itself an answer. `died: null` means deprecation announced, still running.
- [Answer "what replaced X"](https://models.rip/index.md): every grave that has a known successor names it and links to it.
- [Date a deprecation wave](https://models.rip/openai.md): graves are grouped into a plot per provider, in launch order, each stating its own retirement date.
